It’s July, and time for our #NewProfilePic. To mark #NHS75, this month showcases Ann Maylnn, a brilliant Midwife who has devoted nearly 50 years to working in the NHS. We spoke to Ann about her journey into the NHS and why she’s passionate about her work.

How long have you been working at King’s and why do you like it?
“I have worked for South London and King’s College Hospital Foundation Trust since 1990, but I originally joined the NHS in 1973 and trained as an SRN (state registered nurse-someone who has the licence to legally practise as a nurse) at St. Stephen’s Hospital, Chelsea, and Westminster. Continuing my career, I then trained as a midwife in 1978 at Croydon University Hospital. I wasn’t sure if midwifery would suit me, but after witnessing my first delivery, I have done nothing else since.”

What makes your role special to you and the patients you care for?
“I have always enjoyed antenatal care, and I trained as a parent education teacher. I am really proud of setting up and running a case-loading team (a midwifery service that offers continuity of care by a named midwife and a small team throughout pregnancy, labour, birth and the postnatal period) in the Continuity Team many years ago.”

Any memorable moments in your role?
“Working all these years, I enjoy seeing the same ladies for the second, third, and sometimes fourth time.”

July marks the NHS’s 75th anniversary. What does this mean to you?
“I am very proud to still be working in the NHS on the 75th Anniversary, and it being the year I complete my 50 years in the NHS. Now my youngest son is currently working for NHS England in the women’s health project.”
