Refurbished rooms for King’s patients receiving end of life care
06 December 2024 - Three rooms in wards caring for older people at King’s College Hospital have benefitted from a makeover to support people receiving end-of-life care.
The rooms have been refurbished with a warm, tranquil colour scheme on the walls, calming artwork and softer lighting. Patients and their families can also use a trolley with resources to personalise the room, and make it feel more comforting.
The upgrade is part of an improvement initiative led by two Palliative Care Nurse Specialists at King’s, Charoula Karpathiotaki and Amy Kilby. The work was funded by charities the Crown Fund and Friends of King’s.
Charoula Karpathiotaki said: “It is a real privilege to deliver palliative and end-of-life care, which we only have one opportunity to get right. These improvements mean our patients and their loved ones can benefit from a more calming, tranquil atmosphere at what can often be a very difficult time.
“We now plan to make sure more patients in other wards, both at King’s College Hospital and Princess Royal University Hospital (PRUH), can benefit from a greater number of resource trollies. We hope these changes will bring comfort to our patients, and those who find themselves having to say goodbye to their loved ones.”
