A calming new space funded by King’s College Hospital Charity is expected to transform the experience for young patients with additional needs who come into hospital for dental care.
A new sensory room will offer a safe and relaxing space for children who may become anxious, distressed or nervous about their appointment. The room contains interactive lights and sounds, bubble mirrors, tactile wall toys, and soft seating, which can help patients to relax and allow them to forget about the hospital environment.
The project to open a new sensory room was led by Maalini Patel, Consultant in Paediatric Dentistry, and Paige Holdaway, Dental Nurse Practice Development Co-Ordinator at King’s College Hospital, in collaboration with families and children who attend King’s Dental Institute for their treatment.
Dr Mark Sayers, Clinical Director of the Dental Institute at King’s College Hospital, said: “We care for a wide range of children from across the South East of England, including those who are neurodiverse. For some children, a hospital setting can be overwhelming, particularly in areas such as large noisy waiting rooms. This new sensory room will help children and their families who need a comfortable, soothing environment, improving their wellbeing and reducing their anxiety.”
Iona Joy, Director of Grants and Insight, King’s College Hospital Charity, added: “As a Charity, prioritising inclusive and accessible care is at the heart of what we do. We are delighted to support this brilliant sensory room, which will provide sensory stimulation to children with special educational needs (SEN), helping to ensure they have the very best support for a better hospital experience.”
