Our new staff profile for March 2023 is Viranga Brooks, Lead Nurse in Adult Medicine at the Princess Royal University Hospital and South Sites. Viranga has been working at King’s since 2014. She said: “Working here gives me a great sense of belonging. I work with brilliant people who truly want to make a difference for our staff and patients.”

What makes your role special to you and the patients you care for?

My role enables me to have a strong focus and influence over the quality, safety and effectiveness of the care that is delivered to our patients. As a leader, I have the opportunity to shape the culture of King’s by creating environments where people can be their best. When people are at their best, they are able to deliver outstanding care.

Do you have memorable moments in your role?

Difficult to choose one as there are many. The most rewarding moments are when a patient or their loved ones let me know that they felt safe, cared for and listened to, which I recently experienced in one of our wards in Orpington Hospital from a patient that was approaching end-of-life care and her family.

March includes International Women’s Day; what does this mean to you, and the patients you care for?

March is International Women’s Day, a global celebration of women’s achievements while raising awareness of biases, stereotypes and discrimination experienced by women. The theme for 2023 is #EmbracingEquity, calling for everyone to be part of a movement towards a more diverse, equal, equitable and inclusive world.

Women that we care for and work with and around the world face significant health issues. It is important to me as a nurse, and one of the Co-Chairs of the King’s Women’s Network, that I can help and advocate to make informed decisions about their health.
