Upgrading Endoscopy Services at the PRUH
28 February 2022 - We are making improvements to our endoscopy services at the Princess Royal University Hospital in Orpington.
We are committed to ensuring that our local population have access to the best diagnostic services so that people can receive the support and care they need in a purpose-built, high-quality environment.
We have recently submitted a planning application to Bromley Council to expand our endoscopy service by building a new stand alone unit, situated at the back of the PRUH near the Chartwell Unit. In the new building, there will be six consulting rooms, six procedure rooms, an integral decontamination unit as well as male and female recovery areas. There will also be new staff training facilities created as part of the new unit to support career and development opportunities for new and current staff.
We anticipate that the new endoscopy unit will allow us to carry out several hundred more procedures each year, helping us to see people on time and treat conditions such as cancer at an earlier stage.
We have already made great strides in reducing waiting times for endoscopy and these plans will go further to make sure local people have timely access to diagnostic tests. This is an important pillar of our new vision to be a BOLD organisation, providing outstanding care for all who use and visit our hospitals.
We hope that the new unit will be accredited by the Joint Advisory Group on gastrointestinal endoscopy – a national standard of excellence.
Following planning approval, it is anticipated that the construction will begin in summer 2022 and the finished unit will begin welcoming patients in autumn 2023.
