Maternity tobacco dependence clinic
Stopping smoking will help both you and your baby immediately. Protecting your baby from tobacco smoke is one of the best things you can do to give your child a healthy start in life. It can be difficult to stop smoking, but it’s never too late to quit. Get more information about the benefits of stopping smoking in pregnancy on the NHS website.
Our in-house maternity tobacco dependence clinic supports pregnant women and birthing people to stop smoking in their pregnancy and beyond. We also advise non-smokers whose tests show high levels of carbon monoxide on ways to reduce their exposure.
What to expect
You can self-refer to our service when you book your maternity care with us. Alternatively, on your initial assessment if you disclose your smoking status, and/or your carbon monoxide monitoring test results are elevated, your midwife will make a referral to the smoking cessation specialist midwife for discussion and support.
Within the tobacco dependence clinic, you will have access to a wide range of nicotine replacement therapy medications, including:
- patches
- inhalators
- mouth sprays
- gum
- lozenges
- vapes
- micro tablets
- nasal sprays
- oral strips
We will also provide behavioural support to manage cravings and support you to quit finding the best way that works for you.
