BBC Newsnight special on NHS features King’s

13 February 2025 - Staff at King’s featured in a special report about the NHS on BBC Two’s Newsnight broadcast on Thursday 13 February

Staff at the Trust spoke to Wes Streeting MP, Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, during his visit to King’s College Hospital last week, and he was joined by Newsnight presenter Victoria Derbyshire, who interviewed staff and patients about the challenges and opportunities facing the NHS now, and in the future.

During his visit, the Minister met with staff based in the hospital’s Emergency Department, including Dr Emer Sutherland, Emergency Medicine Consultant and Clinical Director, who talked about the demands of emergency medicine, and the steps she and her team are taking to improve care for patients, including those presenting with mental health needs.

The Minister also visited Christine Brown ward, and spoke to Dr Chirag Patel, Gastroenterology Registrar, about the benefits of Epic, our electronic patient record system, which has replaced a number of historic IT systems, as well as paper records, since its introduction in October 2023. He also spoke to Sarah Hull, Matron, and Hannah Sunley, Staff Nurse, about the positive aspects of working in the NHS, but also the worrying rise in violence and aggression against NHS staff.

Finally, he met with Professor Bu Hayee, Gastroenterology Consultant and Clinical Director, about the benefits of artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare, and how new technology being used at King’s is helping clinicians spot potential cancers during endoscopy screening.
