Chaplaincy volunteer spreads festive cheer at King’s College Hospital
13 December 2024 - Mary Burke is one of many King’s volunteers sharing comfort and joy
Mary Burke, who lives in Dulwich, is one of hundreds of volunteers helping to make the festive season special for King’s College Hospital staff and patients. Mary works as a Chaplaincy Volunteer at the Trust, helping provide spiritual and pastoral support to those of all faiths, and none.
Mary said: “I became a Chaplaincy Volunteer over a year ago, and I love being able to help people from all backgrounds and walks of life. The Trust’s Chaplaincy team is also extremely supportive, which helps enormously.
“Over the festive period, I help with the Trust’s Christmas carol services for staff and patients, and I regularly support patients on David Marsden ward. Many patients there are often far from home, away from loved ones and family members, and at Christmas time, that can be particularly hard.
“I like to think that it helps with patients’ recoveries to know that there are people on hand who can help meet any spiritual needs they have. It can also be comforting for people who just feel like they need someone to talk to or be still and have some space. Christmas is a time for peace as well as joy, after all.”
