King’s College Hospital scoops HSJ award

24 March 2021 - The Trust has won the 2021 Workforce Initiative of the Year Award

King’s College Hospital’s Covid-19 Staff Support and Wellbeing Programme has been announced as the winner of the Workforce Initiative of the Year at this year’s HSJ awards.

The Covid-19 pandemic placed extreme pressure on the Trust’s health and care workforce. Led by Mary Jane Doherty, Consultant Psychiatrist at King’s Mental Health Liaison Service, the COVID-19 Staff Support and Wellbeing Programme rapidly implemented a whole hospital staff wellbeing response, bringing together multiple disciplines to manage the impact of COVID-19 on the 14,000 people who work and volunteer at King’s.

The judges said of the Covid-19 Staff Support and Wellbeing Programme: “This was an initiative which perfectly met the criteria of this category in terms of innovation in workforce development. The programme had been initiated at speed – but had taken a holistic, long-term, strategic approach to the impact of the pandemic on the workforce.

“The judges were impressed by the clinical leadership of the team overseeing the work – linked closely to the HR, organisational development and occupational health functions. Most significantly, the initiative was evidence-based, had demonstrably led to behavioural and cultural change across the organisation – and was potentially replicable within other organisations. Congratulations to the team!”

King’s Health Partners (KHP) were also shortlisted for an award in the ‘Digitising Patient Services Initiative’ category, with Alder Hey Children’s FT – Global Digital Exemplar and HIMSS 6 Accreditation taking home the prize.
