King’s team wins Royal Society of Medicine award

13 October 2022 - The team’s work on advance care planning won the John Glyn prize for quality improvement

A group of geriatricians and the End of Life Care Team from King’s College Hospital has been commended on the work they have done on Advance Care Planning at the Trust.

The work looked at the care provided to frail older people, and how Trust colleagues can have tangible, timely and recorded conversations with patients and their families about their current health needs and what care plans they would like in place for the future.

Dr Sharmeen Hasan, Consultant Physician and Trust Lead for End of Life Care, and Dr Susannah Elsesser, Registrar in Geriatric Medicine, presented their work on behalf of the wider team at the Royal Society of Medicine on 6 October 2022 before clinching the prize.

Dr Sharmeen Hasan said, “We are delighted to have won the Royal Society of Medicine’s prize for quality improvement for our work on helping older patients and their families plan for the future.

“Advance care planning is about ensuring patients understand their current health condition and giving them the opportunity to make choices about their future care and treatment. In these conversations we establish what is important to the patient, any concerns they may have about the future, and where the patient would like to be cared for in the future, be it their own home, a care home or another care setting.”
