#NewProfilePic for May 2024
01 May 2024 - Every month, a different member of staff will be our #NewProfilePic on social media
This May, our #NewProfilePic features Jessica Kelly, an ocularist at King’s College Hospital.
An ocularist creates prosthetic eyes for people who have lost an eye due to injury or illness. Jessica works with patients to create custom-made artificial eyes that look as natural as possible and fit comfortably.
We spoke to Jessica about her role and what she finds fulfilling. She said:
“I’ve been working as an ocularist at King’s for eight months and I did a year’s training here before that. I make artificial eyes for people who have either lost their eye or lost eyesight due to trauma, eye disease or another medical condition.
“I like helping people and I’m quite creative. I enjoy the painting of the eyes and it’s just a really lovely and fulfilling role.
“The best part of the job for me is when I fit the prosthesis because I see how much of a difference, I’ve made to somebody. I find it very rewarding and really fulfilling.”
