Neuro-oncology
What we do
King’s neuro-oncology service is one of the largest in the UK and Europe and sees patients referred nationally and internationally. It has been recognised as a Tessa Jowell Centre of Excellence.
Part of the neurosurgery department, the neuro-oncology service runs specialised multi-disciplinary team (MDT) clinics combining clinical expertise with state-of-the-art facilities and remains active in research and clinical trials to ensure our patients receive the very best care and treatment.
The MDT involves neurosurgeons, neuro-oncologists, neuro-pathologists, neuro-radiologists, clinical nurse specialists (CNS), and a therapy team.
Multiple specialists are present in the clinic to offer a holistic approach and refer to other clinics if needed for further support.
We also run children’s (paediatric) clinics and provide the UK’s only dedicated Teenage and Young Adult Service for central nervous system tumours.
See our brain and spine cancer webpage for more details of the cancer care provided.
Inter-hospital transfers
Many patients with neurological problems can be treated at their local hospital. However, some patients need specialised investigation and treatment at a regional neuroscience centre, such as King’s.
If you need to be transferred to King’s, a team of doctors, nurses, and bed co-ordinators will oversee this. For more information see the ‘Inter-hospital transfer process (neuroscience)’ leaflet, below.
Preparing for your appointment
If you are being seen in the outpatient clinic you are likely to have had an MRI scan and we will usually have the results.
If you have not had an MRI scan, please call the Neuro-oncology Co-ordinator.
If you are waiting to hear about an MRI appointment at King’s, please contact the MRI appointments office.

Routine Referrals
All routine referrals from a GP or local community must be submitted through the electronic referral system (eRS). Each referral form should be fully completed and include an MRI scan of the patient before being sent exclusively via the eRS.
Routine referrals are reviewed at the weekly Neuro-oncology MDT meeting held every Friday.
To ensure a referral is included in the review meeting, please complete the Neuro-oncology referral form below and email it, by no later than 4pm Wednesday, to the Neuro-oncology team at [email protected]. Referrals received after this time will be reviewed at the following Friday’s meeting.
A Neuro-oncology referral form must be completed and sent to King’s Neuro-oncology team for each referred patient. All investigations – i.e. CT/MRI – must be image-linked to King’s College Hospital Radiology Department.
Emergency Referrals
Urgent referrals for suspected malignancies can be made via the two week wait pathway.
Other acute referrals from hospitals
Go to the acute neurosurgery referrals page for advice on how to refer using the inter-hospital system.
Other acute referrals from GPs
Patients should be referred to their local A&E department for urgent assessment.
