Haemato-oncology

What we do

King’s is a leading national and international centre for the diagnosis and treatment of blood cancers.

We are home to the centralised bone marrow transplant (BMT) service for King’s and Guy’s and St Thomas’s NHS Foundation Trusts. This has the largest BMT programme in the UK and performs more than 160 transplants a year.

We are also an international centre for research into and the treatment of myeloid leukaemias, lymphomas and myeloma, and have the first immune gene therapy programme for leukaemia approved by the Gene Therapy Advisory Committee (GTAC). We were the first hospital in the UK to treat lymphoma patients with CAR T therapy, and have an active CAR programme in lymphoma, leukaemia and myeloma.

As a Centre of Excellence for myelodysplasia we have expertise in matched and unrelated transplants for the treatment of myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS).

Our haemato-oncology service:

  • carries out autologous (from the patient’s own body) and allogeneic (from a donor) transplants, including haploidentical (half-matched) programmes
  • carries out numerous national and international studies, which gives our patients access to innovative treatments
  • has a cellular and gene therapy programme for myeloid and lymphoid disorders.

Conditions we treat

We have a large and active interest in the pathogenesis, manifestations and management of haematological malignancies.

We have the largest bone marrow transplant programme in the UK, performing more than 160 autologous, allogeneic and volunteer-unrelated transplants per year in a dedicated unit, using conventional and cutting-edge conditioning protocols.

We are also a harvest centre for BBMR, the Anthony Nolan Trust (including cord harvest), and licensed by the MHRA for granulocyte harvesting.

Our service has various clinics that deal with secondary, tertiary and quaternary referrals for the following conditions:

  • acute and chronic myeloid leukaemia
  • high and low grade lymphoma
  • chronic lymphocytic leukaemia
  • aplastic anaemia
  • paroxysmal nocturnal haemoglobinuria (PNH)
  • myeloma
  • myelodysplastic syndrome
  • lymphoproliferative disorders
  • plasma cell disorders.

We see local, regional and national referrals. Local patients are seen as new patients and have tests ordered at the unit. Tertiary referrals may come with information supplied by their referring service.

The Laboratory for Molecular Haemato-oncology User Guide gives a range of information including how to request tests, transport samples, and turnaround times. Please also see the Synnovis website for more information about laboratories and tests.

What is required before referring a patient

Please ensure relevant blood tests and other investigations are carried out before the appointment.
