Diabetes inpatient service
What we do
We see adults who have diabetes and are currently staying at King’s College Hospital as an inpatient. They may have been admitted due to problems with their diabetes, or for a different reason. We also run an outpatient clinic (D-WARD clinic) for people with diabetes who have recently been discharged after an inpatient stay.
While you are staying in hospital, we help you and the team leading your care to control your diabetes. A number of things can affect your blood sugar levels during a hospital stay. For example:
- the illness or injury you have
- new medication
- stress
- changes to your diet
All inpatient teams at King’s can refer you to us. We are part of the Diabetes service.
If you have had a new diabetes diagnosis
You may be admitted to hospital with a new diagnosis of diabetes.
We know it can be stressful to get a new diagnosis. To help with this, we will give you the information and the follow-up plans that you need.
You will usually be reviewed by a diabetes doctor or a diabetes specialist nurse, or both. They will give you advice on your condition and how to manage it. This may include starting oral medication or insulin.
You can also find more information in our Self-management resources.
D-WARD outpatient clinic
D-WARD outpatient clinic is for local adults living with diabetes who have recently had an inpatient stay in hospital.
We aim to see people within 6 weeks of their discharge from hospital. We also provide telephone support in the early days after you leave hospital, to ensure your discharge is safe and supported.
We aim to reduce your risk of being readmitted to hospital. Our support includes:
- information to help you manage your condition
- making sure the further follow-up support you need is in place. This may be with your GP, local community diabetes team or a specialist diabetes service
