Neuroradiology
What we do
We provide specialist brain and spinal imaging and treatment using techniques including:
- magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanning, which uses a powerful magnet and radio waves to produce images
- computerised tomography (CT) scanning, which uses x-rays to produce detailed cross-sectional and 3D images
- angiography, which uses x-ray images to look at blood vessels
- interventional neuroradiology, where x-ray images are used to guide the treatment of conditions such as brain aneurysms (a bulge in the blood vessels) so patients do not need major surgery
- vertebroplasty, where special bone cement is injected into the vertebrae to stabilise and restore strength to the spine and relieve pain
- various pain relief procedures
Patients are usually seen by a specialist such as a neurosurgeon or neurologist before they are referred to us.
We are open Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.

Conditions we treat
We offer:
- specialist imaging of the brain and spinal cord using MRI scanning, CT scanning, cerebral angiography and fluoroscopy
- endovascular treatment of intracranial conditions such as aneurysms and arterio-venous malformations
- other interventional techniques including vertebroplasty and pain relief procedures
This is a tertiary service and cannot be booked by GPs. Neuroscience consultants at another hospital in the region can refer to the service. Referrals from outside King’s should be made by letter.
GPs should refer to the appropriate neuroscience clinician (neurologist or neurosurgeon), who will then refer the patient for neuroradiological procedures as necessary.
Booking a patient at King’s
Routine Referrals
All referrals must include the clinical history, details of previous imaging, the patient’s name, address, date of birth, NHS number (if known) and GP details.
To make a routine imaging referral from outside King’s, write a referral letter marked ‘routine’ and:
- attach it to an email and send it to [email protected].
- or post it to: Neuroradiology Appointments, Neuroradiology Department, King’s College Hospital, Denmark Hill, London SE5 9RS
For a neuroradiological second opinion on images obtained at other institutions, transfer the images electronically and email [email protected]. Requests for second opinions will be treated as routine referrals.
Emergency Referrals
All referrals must include the clinical history, details of previous imaging, the patient’s name, address, date of birth, NHS number (if known) and GP details.
Out-of-hours emergency referrals should be made via the on-call radiologist.
Urgent opinions on the neurosurgical management of patients at other hospitals should be made via the duty neurosurgeon after transferring the images electronically.
Urgent referral letters should be marked ‘urgent’, attached to an email and sent to [email protected].
